Enormous U.S based agricultural companies such as Monsanto have paid lobbyists giant sums of money to convince the government that their products are safe. They argue that genetically modified foods are more resistant to insects, therefore requiring fewer pesticides used by the farmer; use less land by yielding more food per acre; and can be loaded with extra nutrients to fight malnutrition. According to them, all these improvements come with no threat to the environment or to human health.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is convinced (or maybe paid to believe) that these foods do not require any independent safety testing. As of now the only tests conducted are by the producers themselves and the rigor of these unsupervised tests is questionable at best.
